There are other qualities that make the compost tumbler a more attractive option to me.  First, it keeps the compost off the ground and that helps keep away the critters.  If you live in states like Montana, where there are bears present, you can find bears trying to rummage through compost bins.   Having a tumbling compost bin is more difficult for bears to get in to.

Compost tumblers seem to be the neatest and tidiest compost bins around.  Other compost bins seem to attract leaves and spider webs.  The compost tumbler doesn’t by the simple virtue of it being moved around almost daily.  Since it moves around daily, those critters and their webs do not have the opportunity to set up shop there.  Of course the critters who are in the compost tumbler will have the opportunity to continue doing their valuable work for you.

Another advantage if you live in an area where you might experience water restrictions is that compost tumblers, since they are completely sealed, are able to maintain moisture better than other types of compost bins.  It is important to keep the compost which is accumulating  in compost tumblers moist to the consistency of a damp sponge.  Also, you will need to be more careful about adding brown materials to your compost tumbler.  You should always add brown materials, such as dried leaves, when you are adding compost to the bin.  For a tumbler, it is a good idea to add green and brown materials in the ratio of 3:2.

Our first solution was to keep the compost in a bowl in the refrigerator. While this kept the fruit flies down (I don’t know if would work for longer periods of time, but there were no fruit flies after two days), the odor and lost fridge space became a problem.

Then we tried a recycled plastic container with lid. Over time, the lid lost it’s shape and didn’t seal properly. The plastic stained and developed odors. And we had to keep it under the sink because it was so unattractive. While this wasn’t a problem in and of itself, it is much more convenient to be able to keep a compost collector on the counter, where it is readily available.

Over the years we’ve tried a few different compost buckets, but my wife always wanted a more attractive container. Would you want a bug, stinky, ugly, kitchen compost bin for your friends and family to see? Our dining area abuts our kitchen and the bucket, when kept on the counter, is visible.

For the holidays, we bought ourselves the kitchen ceramic compost keeper. It has a few flaws, but overall we’re pretty happy with it. Because we eat mostly produce, we generate a lot of compost and fill this bin up quickly, usually in two days, so I’d love it if they made a larger size. I’m considering getting a second compost keeper.

Pros:

• Easy to clean – just pop out the filter and put it in your dishwasher.
• Attractive on counter – this unit is attractive enough to serve as a cookie jar.
• Large storage area – this bucket has a one gallon capacity
• The filter works really well – the filter on this unit is so efficient we have never noticed any odor from this bucket since we’ve owned it. Just make sure not to overfill the bucket. It is very important to keep food from touching the filter.

Cons:

• The handle falls off all the time. It’s a very poor design. We removed it permanently. I was afraid it would detach while I was walking down the driveway and the bucket would break.
• Weight – The bucket is made of ceramic and is a bit weighty. While this isn’t a problem for me, it might be for an elderly person.

Overall, I would have to say that this kitchen compost bin is a very good and useful product.

Composting is beneficial to the environment.  By diverting food scraps from the waste stream, you can easily reduce the amount of waste being put into our landfills.  Sure, your food scraps are biodegradable, but it takes a very long time for things to break down in a landfill.  This is because the necessary components for decomposition: sunlight; moisture; and oxygen are all missing in a landfill.  Because of this, microbial decomposition is severely limited.

Yard and food waste, which can be easily composted and break down quite nicely in a matter of weeks or months, can take decades to decompose in a landfill.  It is estimated that food in a landfill degrades by 50 percent over the course of twenty years!  This statistic is enough to make most people consider composting.

Traditional composting is always done outdoors, but not everyone has access to a compost pile -- Vermicomposting can be a great solution here.  Vermicomposting systems are essentially closed systems which can be kept indoors.  However, if you have access and weather permits, you can keep your worm composter outdoors.

So how does worm composting actually work?  First, you need a special vermicompost bin.  There are a few different types of bins you can buy, but the easiest is a three-bin vertical bin.  When setting up your bins you will need to fill the bottom bin with moist bedding. The worms will burrow into the bedding and you will place your food scraps into this as well.  A coir mat, or coco peat moss, makes for a good bed.  You can also used shredded brown leaves (chop them up using your lawn mower or the chopping attachment to your leaf blower), or strips of newspaper – just make sure to skip the skip the inserts.

Whatever you use, your bedding needs to be the consistency of a well wrung-out sponge.  Many people recommend adding a handful or two of soil.  This helps the worms to digest the food scraps.  Reminder:  the bedding needs to be suitably moist.  Some bins work better with slightly different types of bedding.  Make sure to read the instructions that come with your bin.  Then add about a pound of worms to your bin.  You’ll want to buy worms specific to this task; usually red wigglers.  These are not your typical garden earthworms.

After two or three days, you can begin feeding your worms.  Generally, you will be feeding them fruits and vegetable scraps.  A large chop is good.  Use the waste from fruits and vegetables.  You can also add coffee grounds and paper filters, and tea leaves and bags (not the staples or string).  Do not add fat to your worm composting bin.  Do not add any fish / meat / dairy waste.  These things will attract pests.  Some people suggest avoiding garlic, onions, and citrus rinds as these can sometimes be rejected by your worms.  The best way to handle these products is to “test” them out first.   Add a small quantity and see how it is received.  If your worms process these items you can add more.  Don’t add rotten food to the bin.  You may occasionally need to add water to the bin to keep things moist.

To add the food, simply bury it in the bedding.  Start at one corner of the box and gradually move across the box.  It is a good idea to avoid adding more food until most of the old food has been processed.  Once you get to the other side of the bin, start over again until the bin is almost full.  Then cover the bin with scraps of moist newspaper and prepare the second tier.  After a few days, add food to the second tier. The worms will begin to move into this bin as they clear the lower bin of all food scraps.

Once the worms have cleared the lower bin you will have worm castings left over.  Worm castings, also called vermicompost, are actually worm poop, and make some of the best fertilizer you can get your hands on.  Castings are beneficial to your plants and to your soil as well.  Adding worm castings to your soil can also help your plants ward off insects.

One final note, if you are keeping your worms outdoors there are a few things to consider.  The worms cannot survive at temperatures over 90 degrees or under 40 degrees.  If you do keep your worms outdoors, it is a good idea to keep the worm composter in the shade.

The most common compost bins for sale are the one bin system variety.  If you and your family produce a lot of green waste this may not be sufficient for you, but it is a great introduction to composting.  If you wind up needing additional compost bins for sale, you can always add bins as you go; more on that below.  In a one-bin compost system you basically put your compost matter into the bin.  As you continue to add matter to the pile, things begin to break down.  Over time, you will have mature compost at the bottom of the pile, so there is no reason now to find compost bins for sale and buy one (or more) that makes sense for you.

Most single bin systems have a lid on top that you can open to put in the organic waste and a door at the bottom where you can take out the matured compost.  If you do nothing else, the organic matter will break down in to compost over time.  This is sometimes referred to as passive composting.  Aerating or turning the compost will produce usable humus in as little as six weeks.

There are single bin tumbling systems which tend to be a little on the smaller side, but offer ease of use and a quicker turnaround for finished compost.  You can get finished compost in as little three weeks using a tumbling or rotating system.

For people who generate more food waste, it could make a lot of sense to find several compost bins for sale.  For most folks, two or three bin systems are a good idea.  This allows you to have various stages of decomposition.  When one bin is more than half filled, you stop adding to that bin and start accumulating food and yard waste to the next.  The organic matter in the original bin will break down more quickly without the addition of new organic matter.   A third bin can also be used to store finished compost.

Alternately, you could try vermicomposting.  This system can be used by everyone.  It even works for apartment dwellers.  In this system worms eat the bacteria and fungus that develop as the organic materials begin breaking down.  The system is closed, so the worms cannot get out.  The compost that the worms produce, makes excellent compost.
